First post: catching up to date

I thought it would be best to create a blog so that we can catch everyone up at once. Please bookmark this page to be able to see future status updates. I will be posting here as things develop further. 

 It all started when Rain went in for a mammogram and they discovered a lump in her left breast. Her doctor sent her for a biopsy. 

March 17: I took her to get the biopsy done. 

March 19: we got the results and it was cancer, Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. Basically, fully encapsulated. The best possible type. 

March 20: we got an appointment with Dr. Patel, a breast surgeon. 

March 22: we met with Dr. Patel for the initial consultation. She told us that the cancer was stage 0, which was a good thing. But, there was some additional calcification and an area that they didn't get a clear scan on, so she referred us to Riverside Medical Center for a PET scan. Basically, they inject a dye to make things easier to see. Dr. Patel also referred Rain to a genetic consultant for genetic testing to see if she had any genetic markers for any sorts of cancer. 

 March 27: We met with the genetic counselor for the genetic testing. 

 April 9: We went to Riverside Hospital for the PET scan and another set of biopsies. 

 April 11: Riverside Hopital called and said they found more cancer. Dr. Patel called and told Rain that she was going to need a mastectomy. 

 April 12: We met with Dr. Patel and she infromed us that a bilateral mastectomy was probably the best course of action. The cancer is stage 1, which means it has spread. The good news is that the genetic testing shows no genetic markers for cancer. 

We went next door and got an EKG and chest X-Ray for pre-surgery testing. They already have the necessary bloodwork. Rain needs to call her pulmonoligist for surgical clearance before a date can be set for surgery. 

Rain was referred to a plastic surgeon who will assist in the operation. Basically, the plastic surgeon and Dr. Patel will double team the operation to minimize Rain's time on the table. We have an appointment Monday, April 15 with the plastic surgeon. 

 A date has been set for the surgery. She goes in on May 13 to get a Nuclear Medical Injection. Surgery is scheduled for May 14th, We'll get the exact time the day before.
